Evening Primrose Oil 500mg 120's
It is called Evening Primrose Oil because it is made from the yellow Primrosea flower which opens at dusk. It is a wildflower which grows in North Americaand Europe. People of those lands valued the evening primrose plant for itshealing powers and used its roots for medicinal purposes in the treatment ofbruises, haemorrhoids, sore throats and stomach aches. But the use of its seedoil, which contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is relatively recent. Today, research focuses on the therapeutic effect of the oil from its seeds. GLA is anessential fatty acid which the body converts to hormone like compounds calledprostaglandins, which regulate several bodily functions.
Although the body can make GLA from other types of fat you consume, there isno one food which has appreciable amounts of GLA. Evening primrose oilprovides a concentrated source with 7 to 10% of its fatty acids in the form ofGLA. The other sources of GLA, like Borage seed and blackcurrant seed oilcontain higher amounts of GLA , but they also have a higher percentage of otherfatty acids which may interfere with GLA absorption. Most studies havebeen carried out with evening primrose oil. Most evening primrose oil caps comewith Vit E added to prevent the breakdown of these essential fatty acids.
